How i care for my long hair

hair care, long hair

My hair has got pretty long, i don’t always notice it myself, but i get a lot of comments from other people on it and have to stand up to get it cut now.

A few things to note, my hair is naturally very straight my hair isn’t coloured (i think the last time i put any colour on my hair was back in 2012) and it is fine but i have a lot of it.

I can only talk about what works for my hair and hope you find some use in it.

Products

First, Shampoos and conditioners. I aim for 0% silicones, parabens or colourants. I think this is really important and i have seen a marked improvement in my hair since i implemented this change about a year ago. Before my hair could feel plastic like at the roots, this was actually a build up of the silicone in my hair and it left it looking pretty awful. I switch between two brands at the moment, neither very expensive, i don’t feel the need to spend lots of money on hair care if the cheaper versions are doing it just fine; but i might one day try them and find i was wrong and the difference is marked.

Timotei Pure for greasy hair is my preferred hair care brand. I get it for £1.99 at bottle at my local Lloyds (i have been known to clear out the shelf when they have it in stock) and it has no nastiness in. It leaves my hair very shiny and soft. It has also helped reduce breakage.

My second choice is Mane 'n Tail Deep Moisturizing, which you can buy in a duo pack for £8.05. These are larger bottles so do last longer. The deep moisturizing comes more recommended than the original as it really is good for dry hair as it contains coconut oil and fortifies the hair with Vitamin E and Pro- Vitamin B5.

I also use a pre treatment once a month Lush’s H'Suan Wen Hua. It is full of protein-rich, nourishing ingredients to revive your hair and improve its condition. You put it on dry hair and leave for 20 minutes, then wash out and shampoo as normal. I find this really helps with the condition of my hair and makes it really silky smooth and look really luscious (get the pun?) It might seem expensive at £9.75 a tub but i can around 2 and half uses out of a tub and you don’t need to use it every wash, it is more of a treat.

The final product i use is L'Oreal Mythic Oil. It is a nourishing oil that provides shine and frizz protection. A small pump worked through your hair gives me the feeling of hair dresser hair.

I also only use Lush’s No Drought dry shampoo, as again it isn’t full of chemicals. I put it on at night and sleep in it so it all worked in by the morning, leaving no white marks. Free tip for you there.

Washing best practice

I don’t want to teach granny how to suck eggs but using no sulphate shampoo is slightly different to normal shampoo. Firstly it doesn’t really lather up. To combat this i do two shampoos. The first a quick rub in and rinse out, then on the second it will lather up better, i find this method ensures my hair is clean and i can get 3 to 4 days out of my hair.

General Care

As i only wash my hair about twice a week i am really limiting heat damage. I do blow dry my hair as left to dry naturally it would take about 5-6 hours and aint nobody got time for that. However i do leave it to dry naturally for around 1-2 hours, which again limits the damage and with this method i can get it dry in about 10 minutes on a medium heat. I also don’t need to straighten my hair so i limit damage there.

I sleep with it tied up, as this is when it gets really knotty and tangely, it also sometimes wake up in the middle of the night caught in it, which is rather scary. I use invisabobble to tie it up at night, it doesn’t leave kinks. I also use seamless elastics for tying it up so as not to pull it. I also tie it up when i’m going out if the wind to keep it protected.

Brushes

I have two brushes that i use a Tangle Teezer and The Wet Brush.

My hair gets quite knotty so i need a brush that can tackle it and between these two i have that covered. The perk of the wet brush is that it is designed to be used on wet and dry hair, which is great as most brushes i would use on my wet hair would just pull and snap it instead of gliding through. It is sturdy and doesn’t fly out of my hand or feel like it might snap (i’ve broken several brushes and hit myself in the face with them so this feels safe) and it doesn’t add any static to my hair. Just brush slowly and take your time.

The tangle teezer is great for working on the most stubborn knots and again doesn’t leave my hair broken or snapped. I have a compact size which i keep in my handbag for taming throughout the day.

So there you have it, my hair care routine. I hope you found it helpful and if you have any questions, leave a comment and i’ll get back to you.
